A college search can seem overwhelming when you look at just how many schools there are. This is no small task. The college you search for and choose will be the greatest influence in you life for the next two to four years and longer if you opt for graduate work. So you need to determine what is important to you from a set of criteria before you begin your college search. Here are some important aspects to consider:

You have to look for a college as early as possible. Because colleges are such complex institutions, one should learn how to evaluate and compare even while still in the middle of high school. Every college is going to tell you that they are the best school and so it takes time to look at further details and do more research.

Don’t look for an institution with high admission requirements if your grades are not so good. You know how you do in school today. Not every student gets the highest marks all of the time. Ivy League schools require a high grade point average so if you don’t have this don’t spend a lot of time considering one of these schools.

Ask yourself what you are looking for in a school. Start with your career goals. How will the school you are looking at fulfill your career plans? Are you wanting to move away from home to go to college or are you happy right where you are? Are you looking for a prestigious school or would you prefer one that is smaller? Are you looking to go to school for two years or four years? Are you looking to earn your master’s degree at the same school?

What type of student are you out of school? In other words, are you one who likes to socialize a lot or are you one who prefers a quiet life after classes let out for the day. For example, some schools are located in very small towns. These towns are mostly populated by rural families and things get real slow at the end of the day. If you like a lot of extracurricular activities then this type of college is probably not for you.

How much does the school cost? You have to look at the tuition rates plus consider more in this area of your college search. Certain cities have high costs of living that will no doubt spill over into your living expenses while at college. And these days with the high cost of gasoline, you want to make sure that either there are campus dormitories or plenty of apartments within walking, bus, or bicycling distance.

How diverse is the student body? You should look for a college where there are students from many walks of life and cultural backgrounds. You’ll find that the student experience will be much richer in the long run.
